Sali meets the Greek Ambassador to discuss cross border cooperation and European integration

The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs, Bekim Sali, held an introductory meeting with the new Ambassador of Greece to the Republic of North Macedonia. Sali welcomed the Ambassador and wished him a successful mandate, expressing readiness to deepen cooperation through projects delivering concrete benefits for citizens and businesses in both countries.

Cross-border cooperation was a central topic of the discussion. Under the Interreg Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance programme for 2021–2027, with a budget of around EUR 30 million, 20 projects involving 38 partners from North Macedonia are being implemented. These projects support the development of border regions, environmental protection and cooperation between institutions and local communities.

Particular attention was given to the Markova Noga–Laimos border crossing and complementary investments in the Prespa region. Sali highlighted their importance for connecting communities, developing tourism and creating economic opportunities. The North Macedonia–Greece gas interconnector and the modernisation of railway links along Corridor X were also discussed.

On accession to the European Union, Sali reaffirmed the commitment to reforms and implementation of the Reform Agenda. He emphasised the need for a credible, predictable and merit-based process, alongside gradual integration that delivers concrete benefits before membership.

The Minister also highlighted the opportunity to resume cooperation under the 2019 Memorandum on accelerating the European integration process. Exchanges of experience and expertise with Greek institutions can support stronger administrative capacity and the implementation of European policies.
