First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs Bekim Sali met with European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. Discussions focused on border management, migration, security cooperation, and the impact of the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the 90/180-day rule on professional transport operators.
Minister Sali stressed that road transport is essential to North Macedonia’s economy and its supply chains with the European Union. He emphasised the need for swift dialogue and practical short-term arrangements for professional drivers, alongside sustainable long-term solutions, while fully respecting Schengen security standards.
The meeting highlighted operational cooperation with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), including the new focal point at Blace, and more efficient border crossings through the One Stop Shop model at Qafasan. Cooperation with Europol, efforts against trafficking in human beings and migrant smuggling, and legislative alignment with EU standards were also addressed.
Sali reiterated that secure borders and the lawful movement of people and goods must go hand in hand. The Ministry for European Affairs will continue coordinating with the competent institutions to advance reforms and address the practical challenges facing transport operators.
