The regional development component supports countries in policy development, as well as in preparation for the implementation and management of the Community's cohesion policy, in particular their preparation for the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund.
The objectives of this component are:
- Preparation of candidate countries for programming, implementation and management of the Structural Fund and the Cohesion Fund.
- Implementation of projects that are in line with Community priorities and national priorities, in particular in the transport and environment sectors.
In general, the component supports 3 main areas: transport, environment, regional competitiveness, however, the Republic of Macedonia has entered two of them, i.e. transport and environment, through:
- Transport infrastructure projects, which focus on connecting to the TEN-T networks;
- Environmental projects related to waste management, water supply, urban wastewater and air quality, energy efficiency, renewable energy and seamless urban transport;
- Restructuring of industrial zones, including remediation of contaminated sites and land.
- The strategic objective of the OPRD is to improve the conditions for sustainable development of the Republic of Macedonia by improving the transport and environmental infrastructure for better communication with neighbors, but also ensuring quality of life and economic development.
The first Operational Program was prepared for the period 2007 -2009 and a Financing Agreement was signed for the corresponding period. This Operational Program has been modified twice, for the periods 2010 -2011 and 2012-2013.
